Kate is 30 years old and works in defence. Kate had a life-long dream to represent Australia in sport and felt that weightlifting was her opportunity to pursue this dream. Kate had previously competed in weightlifting while living in regional Victoria but the move to Newcastle meant she could now get more in-person coaching to refine her physical, mental, and sport-specific skills.
Kate attended Empower’s semi-private coaching multiple times a week and her patience and perseverance was rewarded in 2024, when she represented Australia in the F49 weight category at that years Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Suva, Fiji.

Max began training with us when he was 13-years-old and used weightlifting as a secondary sport to enhance his overall athletic development playing for Wanderers Junior Rugby. By the time Max was playing for St Joseph's College, he was the best male Youth (Under 17) weightlifter in NSW, recording a 103kg snatch and a 131kg clean & jerk at 81.65kg bodyweight, which was also equal to the Australian Oceania and Commonwealth Youth team qualifying total. During this time Max also recorded an impressive 180kg back squat for 2 reps!
In 2023 Max was selected for the Rugby Canada Under 18's side, representing them with distinction in a mid-year, round-robin tournament in Amsterdam.

Jessica started with Empower in 2023 as an owner of her own gym and was interested in learning more about weightlifting technique to benefit her own training and help with her coaching. At the time Jess did not quite understand how the lifts worked and lacked some confidence in attempting heavier weights. Jess attended multiple semi-private coached sessions a week and also began competing in weightlifting to practice regulating her confidence in a challenging environment.
By the end of 2025 Jess had added 10kg to her competition snatch and 15kg to her competition clean & jerk. She has gone on to win the bronze medal in the clean & jerk at the Masters Weightlifting World Championships in Las Vegas and had an official tell her she had the best technique of the day! Jess has now completed her AWF Level 1 coaching accreditation and has shared her weightlifting knowledge around multiple gyms in the Newcastle area.

Jim is a 42-year-old engineer who started training with Empower in 2023. Jim competes in track cycling and his cycling coach (who also trains with us at Empower) recommended that he should start training with us. Jim started attending one semi-private coached session a week and completed a second gym session at home, which Empower programs for him.
At the 2024 AusCycling Masters Track National Championships Jim won the silver medal at the in the 750m time trial and the bronze medal in the Keirin.
The 2026 AusCycling Masters Track National Championships saw Jim finish 4th in the time trial and take home the silver medal in the Keirin, topping out around 66km/h.
