At Empower Strength & Performance we specialise in prescribing Olympic Weightlifting-style training as a means of developing strength and power.
The Olympic lifts are an evidence-based tool utilised across most sports for driving athletic performance.
Whether you are targeting range-of-motion, strength, power, balance, or coordination, no other training modality targets all of these aspects in a single movement.
Max began training with us when he was 13-years-old and used weightlifting as a secondary sport to enhance his overall athletic development playing for Wanderers Junior Rugby. By the time Max was playing for St Joseph's College, he was the best male Youth (Under 17) weightlifter in NSW, recording a 103kg snatch and a 131kg clean & jerk at 81.65kg bodyweight, which was also equal to the Australian Oceania and Commonwealth Youth team qualifying total.
During this time Max also recorded an impressive 180kg back squat for 2 reps. In 2023 Max was selected for the Rugby Canada Under 18's side, representing them with distinction in a mid-year, round-robin tournament in Amsterdam.
Charles is no stranger to using weightlifting training to drive his performance for Track Cycling. Back in 2015 Charles trained as a teenager with the weightlifting team at the original Newcastle Barbell Club in Mayfield West, which would play a significant role in his long-term athletic development. Charles would eventually train with the NSWIS Cycling programme at Sydney Olympic Park under some of the best Cycling coaches in the country, competing at several national championships.
Since returning to Newcastle in 2022, Charles has recommenced this style of training to drive his track cycling performance, with reports that key parameters such as peak power and rate of force development are at the highest he has ever attained.
Jy came to us in 2019 with a sporting history involving rugby and enduro. At the time he moved to Newcastle he turned his focus to weightlifting, winning the bronze medal at that year's Australian Junior Championships in the men's 96kg weight class at Sydney Olympic Park. Jy also went on to compete at two further Australian U23 Championships in 2021 and 2022. Jy has since left the sport of weightlifting but continues to use weightlifting-style training to complement his return to competitive enduro racing in 2023.
Weightlifting is the sport we cater for the most.
Since 2015, our programming has helped a vast number of athletes from across all age groups and bodyweight categories to qualify for and podium at state, national, and international competitions.
